Another Vertibird drops into a long abandoned dump yard, power armour clad troops smashing into the ground, laser riles pulsing hot beams of death at a small group of Raiders whose conventional weapons fail to punch holes through the heavily armoured soldiers.
A mongrel angles its head and watches them pass, nose twitching the air for the scent of prey. Ragstags bolt from a clump of stripped trees. With a sigh, Harper slumps to the floor of the bird, looking down out of the door as the grey-brown wastes of the Commonwealth scroll beneath them. Bullets ding off of the airframe as Harper spools up the swivel mounted mini-gun and hammers a stream of lead into the street below, carving the arm clean off of one Super Mutant, the other rounds ripping harmlessly into the already pock marked concrete of a Red Rocket. Nick gives his friend a shove to help the wounded man into the Vertibird, which with a scream, claws toward the sky. They’re out, rescued by the Brotherhood of Steel. With a grunt, blood dripping from his wounds, he nods to Nick and half-runs, half-limps toward the waiting craft.
Tight lipped and grim looking, Harper too watched the bird drop in. The bird would bring them running, but hopefully by then, they’d be in the air and headed for Sanctuary, medical aid, and food, water and sleep for Harper. The three dead Super Mutants scattered around the flare represented less than half of the group they’d run from through the broken town. 44, and Harper was likely down to less than a mag in his 10mm, and a few rounds in the Assault Rifle. The stimpacks had healed some of the human’s wounds, but the secondary effects had made exfiltration on foot impossible. His companion, Harper, was dinged up pretty bad. A routine look-see around a small town in the north had led to an all out engagement against ghouls first, and Super Mutants second. Nick raises his eyes to the sky, watching the bird home in on the plume of red smoke curling from the signal flare, guiding the pilot to an open plot squeezed between broken buildings. The familiar beat of an inbound Vertibird breaks the silence of the Commonwealth.
